Our History and Legacy

HAPI was established in 2015 out of a critical, documented necessity: the urgent need to address systemic capacity shortages within the regional press corps and to bridge the divide between media practitioners, researchers, and policy architects. As the proud sister company of the Media and Communication Center (MCC)—the iconic publisher of The Reporter newspaper in Ethiopia—HAPI possesses deep institutional roots in authentic, independent journalism. This unique heritage allows us to design programs informed by real-world newsroom pressures, rather than abstract theory.

Key Historical Milestones:

Founding: Formally incorporated as a specialized shareholding media-development company in Addis Ababa.

Institutional Catalyst: Served as a foundational stakeholder in the historical establishment and structuring of the Ethiopian Media Council, anchoring modern media self-regulation in the country.

Civil Society Synergy: Partnered directly with Oxfam International to establish the Arms Control Network – Addis Ababa Chapter, proving the vital link between media transparency and international humanitarian policy.

Future Impact: Launching our digital transformation framework to confront modern algorithmic ecosystems, disinformation epidemics, and newsroom monetization crises.
